Our Tyrol Team

Mike Pattinson

General Store Manager, Equipment Buyer

Mike has been at Tyrol the longest of all of us currently working. He joined the retail side in 1987 and was director of the Tyrol Ski School prior to that. He grew up in Rochester and knows many of our long-time customers. He has an uncanny way of remembering names and faces.

Mike wears many hats at Tyrol and he will attest that he has seen it all. For all of his knowledge of outdoor recreation equipment and clothing, Mike has an unassuming nature and enjoys working with people. Countless customers have developed lifelong hobbies thanks in part to Mike’s efforts.

Mike’s outdoor experience includes BWCA trips, kayaking, backpacking, cross country skiing, and more. However, his greatest passion is downhill skiing. He has been PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America) certified and currently helps coach with the Welch Village Development Team. He enjoys the technical aspect of downhill skiing and sharing that with others.

Angela Lowther

Assistant Store Manager, Clothing/Footwear Buyer

Angela has been at Tyrol since 1998. Angela has a friendly way of interacting with customers. She uses her knowledge and experience to help people find the equipment, clothing, or footwear that will best fit their needs. Her attention to detail and organizational skills keeps our store looking great. She has helped outfit many people over the years and knows our customer base well. We think that helps with her success in picking out styles of clothing and shoes that appeal to many. Angela also has a variety of experience in outdoor recreation, including hiking, kayaking, snowshoeing and BWCA/Apostle Island trips.

Greg Winship

Assistant Store Manager, Mounting Room Manager

Greg starting working at Tyrol in 1993. He is fond of recounting all of the changes in the ski and snowboard industry that have occurred over that time. Greg has fit countless boots, skis, and boards throughout his years. He has a way of connecting with people and his enthusiasm for snow sports shows. He loves to see people leave the store with an appropriate set up- he can relate to how much fun they will have! In 2020 Greg took over the reins of managing our ski/snowboard service shop. During the winter season he is responsible for installing ski bindings and tuning skis and snowboards. Greg is a skilled snowboarder himself, and has taken many trips out west and throughout the Midwest to pursue his passion.

Susan Garris

Retail sales, Merchandiser

Susan has been on staff since 1994. Her pleasant demeanor is sensed by all who come into the store. We believe Tyrol looks more “polished” because of her merchandising efforts. Starting at the entrance of the store, she is the one responsible for creating the beautiful outdoor planters and window boxes each season. Her artistic creativity is also evident in the revolving displays throughout the store. From dressing our mannequins to merchandising the clothing racks and creating the “color stories,” we are grateful that she works her magic. We believe it’s one of the main reasons we get compliments on our store and why people find it pleasant to shop Tyrol. Susan also has the “mom” perspective, sharing tips to make the outdoor experience easier and more fun for families with kids.

Chuck Salisbury

Retail Sales

Chuck has been part of team Tyrol since he joined us in 2007. When you ask Chuck how he is, he may respond by saying “I’m special”-and that he is. Before moving to Rochester, Chuck had a military career and then worked at a specialty outdoor store in Durango, CO. He has a variety of past outdoor experience. His current favorites include downhill skiing, fat tire biking, and walking his two energetic dogs. Chuck brings humor and a sense of perspective when he comes to work. Even in the midst of a busy December Saturday, Chuck lightens the mood as he engages with customers and employees. It is outdoor FUN that we are promoting after all!

Anne Weiland

Receiving / Data entry

Anne started working at Tyrol in 2017. She is also originally from Rochester. After high school she moved to Salt Lake City to go to college, work, and then eventually moved back to the Midwest. She commutes to Tyrol a couple days a week from across the river in Wisconsin. Anne likes to work with data and you can tell. She manages our data base and receives product using our inventory system- a critical component of our business. She enjoys the outdoors and keeps busy managing her hobby farm. When she’s not working in her garden or tending her animals, she likes to hike with her dogs, bike, or ski.

Robb Welch

Co-owner, Buyer, Retail Sales

Robb is Tyrol’s fearless leader. He took over the reins in 2003 after working two years under the guidance of our founder– Jerry Schliep–his father-in-law. Prior to moving to MN in 2001, Robb spent 23 years living and recreating in the mountains and desert of Utah. It turns out both his previous work (as a manufacturing/ project engineer) and outdoor adventures prepared him well for running a ski shop in Minnesota. Although Robb has his hands in all aspects of the business, his favorite part is working with the customer, sharing his knowledge and seeing them get properly geared up for the activity (at whatever level) that they are pursuing.

Robb has an adventurous spirit and enjoys many forms of outdoor recreation. While in UT he spent a lot of time skiing, biking, hiking and camping. After moving to the Midwest, his focus shifted to spending time on the Nordic ski trails and alpine ski areas, state parks, and local rivers of SE MN. His active lifestyle translates to “walking the talk” when working with customers at Tyrol.

Kristin Welch

Co-owner, Accounts payable, Customer Service

Kristin is the daughter of Barb and Jerry Schliep, who founded Tyrol Ski & Sports in 1965. She grew up in Rochester around the family business, but didn’t really ever think she’d be helping to run it. Her favorite aspect of co-owning the store is carrying on the family legacy. Making a difference in the community by providing Rochester with quality outdoor recreation products and knowledge is the most satisfying part of the job. Kristin’s responsibilities are primarily behind the scenes (in the office). These include daily office tasks, paying bills, submitting orders and processing warranties. She is known to help out on the retail sales floor when needed.

Kristin enjoys recreating in many forms. Similar to Robb, she also spent some time in UT (11 years- that’s where they met!). The years spent in the West took her outdoor recreation passion and skills to a new level. This included skiing (alpine and back country), mountain biking, hiking, and camping. Since moving back to MN in 2001, she has enjoyed Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, biking, and kayaking/canoeing. She and Robb enjoy multi-day trips into the BWCA and on Lake Superior. Her favorite days are spent out on the lake, river, or trail with friends or family.
